This is Emma Bekker.
A superb creature of delights, who prefers casserole dishes and red wine over jewellery and other such things.
Last night at her 39th birthday party celebration, a small intimate affair with red red red wine, vegan maize tartlets, creamy quiches, and a group of totally unique and interesting folk, i experienced a few truly remarkable things.
Her beautiful daughter, aptly nicknamed by my mother as Tiertjie and lovingly called 'Sussa' by her family, took me out into the cold night so she could show me her thriving veggie patch. Now this was not just any veggie patch, barely visible by the silver light of the moon, she proudly showed me, her gigantic shrub of rasberry's, and her magnificent exotic patch of Brazillian Melon(yes for reals, Brazilian Melon) Now, this is a twelve year old,a young little old soul who, when getting her period for the first time was thrown a party a 'celebration for finally being a woman' which her mother came up with, much to the delight of all of us..It seemed so very creative, so magical in its womanly loveliness. We drank red wine, spoke the wisdom and secrets of the sisterhood, and went home feeling so proud and womanly.
The second thing that blew me away, was witnessing the deep and majestic love Emma and her husband Albert share.
Together for 18 years, and absolutely destined for one another. Not to sound overtly romantic or tediously soppy, but you can honestly not see where the one begins and the other ends. Albert is a man of few words, but boy, when he speaks, they sure are the right ones. When making his speech last night, he said a very beautiful thing "Emma, jy is die beste vrou op die hele aard bol' (Emma, you are the best wife on the entire earth ball) I tell you i swooned, i nearly swooned myself right off my chair.
Emma is a remarkable writer, poet, world understander, luminous human being, that i feel so honoured to be loved by.
Thank you for sending little shivers of awe down my arms last night, the goosbumps are still here and i cant wait for the next dinner, filled to the brim with stories and fireflies and magic which is you.
